Frontier Power to Accelerate UK Long Duration Energy Storage Development, Welcomes Ofgem Decision

Support for Net Zero and Local Manufacturing

Frontier Power is stepping up its deployment of long-duration electricity storage (LDES) to support the UK’s Net Zero targets, create new jobs and boost British manufacturing. The company welcomes Ofgem’s decision to move 16 of its LDES projects—totalling about 2.6 GW and 20 GWh—on to the next stage of the regulator’s Cap and Floor scheme.

Strengthening Energy Security

LDES is essential for balancing renewable power and supporting energy security. The projects approved today will create vital energy storage to help keep the UK’s lights on and lower reliance on fossil fuels. Frontier’s portfolio makes up a significant part of the 77 projects selected by Ofgem, and will help make clean electricity available when it’s most needed.

Meeting the Needs of the Digital Economy

As the UK’s tech sector grows, having reliable, low-carbon electricity is crucial for data centres, artificial intelligence and digital industries. Frontier Power’s LDES projects are designed to deliver that secure, green power for the future economy.

Delivering Scale and Lower Costs

Bringing these LDES projects at scale will help lower costs for households and strengthen the UK’s battery supply chain. Frontier is working with leading suppliers—Eos Energy (US) and Invinity Energy Systems (UK)—so that Eos Energy can establish its presence in the UK and Invinity can significantly scale up its existing manufacturing operations. This strategy supports jobs at home and also strengthens economic ties between the UK and the US by introducing advanced US battery technology to British industry.

Proven Track Record

Frontier’s experience on major projects, like the NeuConnect interconnector, means it is ready to deliver at pace and with high standards for UK consumers and businesses.

CEO Statement

Humza Malik, CEO of Frontier Power, said:

“Ofgem’s approval is a major step forward for Britain’s clean energy plans. Large-scale, long-duration storage helps cut costs, backs up the grid and supports jobs. By working with Eos Energy and Invinity Energy Systems we’re making sure the UK leads in the energy technologies that matter most for both households and the tech sector. These projects aren’t just essential for Net Zero—they’re vital for a strong and secure economy.”
